Background of the Study

Ethics education is an integral part of nursing curricula worldwide, as it helps shape the professional conduct and decision-making abilities of nursing students. Understanding ethical principles such as beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy, and justice is essential for nurses, as they often face complex situations that require moral judgment and adherence to professional standards (Fryer & Allen, 2024). Nursing ethics education also fosters professional behaviors such as integrity, accountability, and respect for patients' rights, which are crucial for effective and compassionate healthcare delivery.

In Abia State University Teaching Hospital, ethics education is incorporated into the nursing program to help students navigate ethical dilemmas and align their practice with established professional standards. However, the impact of ethics education on nursing students' professional conduct remains an area of concern, as students may struggle to apply theoretical ethical principles in real-world clinical settings. This study aims to evaluate the role of ethics education in shaping the professional conduct of nursing students at Abia State University Teaching Hospital.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of ethics education in nursing, the influence of this educational component on the professional conduct of nursing students in Nigerian institutions has not been comprehensively examined. In Abia State University Teaching Hospital, there is limited understanding of how ethics education translates into real-world professional behavior and decision-making. Without such an evaluation, there is a risk that students may not fully internalize the ethical principles necessary for practice, potentially compromising patient care and professional integrity.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the role of ethics education in shaping nursing students’ professional conduct at Abia State University Teaching Hospital.

2. To explore how nursing students apply ethical principles in clinical decision-making and patient care.

3. To assess the factors that influence the effectiveness of ethics education in promoting professional behavior among nursing students.

Research Questions

1. How does ethics education influence nursing students’ professional conduct at Abia State University Teaching Hospital?

2. How do nursing students apply ethical principles in clinical decision-making and patient care?

3. What factors enhance or hinder the effectiveness of ethics education in shaping professional conduct among nursing students?

Research Hypotheses

1. Ethics education positively influences the professional conduct of nursing students at Abia State University Teaching Hospital.

2. Nursing students who receive comprehensive ethics education are more likely to demonstrate ethical decision-making in clinical settings.

3. Factors such as faculty expertise, curriculum design, and clinical exposure significantly affect the effectiveness of ethics education in shaping nursing students’ professional conduct.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on nursing students at Abia State University Teaching Hospital and evaluates the impact of ethics education on their professional conduct. The findings may not be generalizable to other nursing schools or healthcare institutions. Limitations include the reliance on self-reported data, which may introduce bias, and the inability to assess the long-term effects of ethics education on professional behavior after graduation.
